Sludge stabilization plants

Sludge stabilization plants allow for a further, aerobic treatment of the sludge removed from waste water treatment plants. Typically, all organic materials are oxidized and the sludge can settle to the bottom without developing a foul smell. Compared to the anaerobic (without air) sludge fouling process, sludge stabilization is only economic if the self-warming of the sludge allows for a considerable reduction of the process duration.

This requires an aerator that provides intensive sludge aeration and minimizes processing heat losses by whirls (e.g. from surface aerators). FRINGS immersible TA aerators are particularly suitable for this process. Tests and operating results show that these aerators reach a process temperature of 45 °C and more. This process is called aerobic thermophillic sludge stabilization. It allows reduction of the sludge treatment time to less than five days, whereas, according to Imhoff, anaerobic sludge fouling at a temperature of 30 °C takes 27 days.

FRINGS immersible TA aerators provide a relatively high circulation rate and do not get blocked (unlike compressed air aeration systems) by the high weight of dry solids in the sludge, even if this weight is up to 50 kg/ m3 (5 %) and more, due to a previous sludge thickening and mixing of fresh sludge (from preliminary clarification) with excess sludge (from secondary clarification)!

FRINGS has reliable information regarding aerator sizing for sludge stabilization plants. The design of sludge stabilization basins is similar to that of activated sludge basins (discontinuous operation).
