FRINGS mechanical defoamers – an alternative to chemical defoaming in process technology
Foam is typically produced when gas is released by a chemical reaction, through continuous aeration, or in transport processes. The use of chemical anti-foam agents is often not desirable: Quality is reduced if they are allowed to remain in the product, or an expensive and time-consuming process is required to remove them.

The problem can be minimized or solved with mechanical foam destruction. FRINGS mechanical defoamers use centrifugal forces to split the rising foam into a liquid-free exhaust gas flow and a liquid flow with clearly reduced gas content.

Applications
Mechanical defoamers can be used in many applications:
- Exhaust gas defoaming
- Waste water defoaming
- Recovery of coating agents
- Dispersion defoaming
- Foam flotation of ions, surfactants, or particles
Advantages of mechanical defoaming compared to chemical defoaming
Mechanical defoaming provides new possibilities of process management for different applications:
- Reduce or minimize use of chemical anti-foam agents
- Mediums are not “drained away“ together with the foam, reactions are more stable
- Continuous aeration – maximized use of head space
- Valuable substances and/or contaminants are concentrated and drained off
Installation
FRINGS vertical defoamers are typically mounted in the head of the fermenter, reactor, or tank. The rising foam is aspirated into the rotating centrifugal drum of the defoamer. The foam is concentrated and returned to the process or diverted for further treatment. The concentrate return line ends tangentially above the liquid level, eliminating secondary foaming.

Sizing of defoamers
Foam is always different. Different foam-producing ingredients or mediums cause different surface tensions. The following factors have to be taken into account when sizing a defoamer:
- Physical/chemical quantities of the medium
- Foam stability and drainage
- Aeration rate of process
- Foam humidity
In many instances, foam characterization data can be obtained by the customer. FRINGS also offers the services of our applications specialists for on-site visits or in our applications laboratory. The sizing of defoamers is based on foam characteristics, on the amount of liquid to be drained off, the amount of gas contained in the foam and on the admissible pressure losses. Our defoamers are equipped with:
- Foam contact control
- Double mechanical seals with barrier fluid
- Speed control.
Sizes
Our defoamers for chemical applications are based on the tried and tested FRINGS defoamers used in the ACETATOR series. They are classified according to the amount of gas contained in the foam.
